Updated 2014 Fantasy Football Rankings: Top 15 Quarterbacks

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Injuries have not been a factor, at least not yet, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some minor changes to our quarterback rankings.  With drafts/auctions right around the corner, it’s worth taking the time to give an update on where we stand:

  1. Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos
  2. Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints
  3. Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers
  4. Matthew Stafford – Detroit Lions
  5. Andrew Luck – Indianapolis Colts
  6. Robert Griffin III – Washington Redskins
  7. Colin Kaepernick – San Francisco 49ers
  8. Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers
  9. Tom Brady – New England Patriots
  10. Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons
  11. Russell Wilson – Seattle Seahawks
  12. Nick Foles – Philadelphia Eagles
  13. Jay Cutler – Chicago Bears
  14. Tony Romo – Dallas Cowboys
  15. Andy Dalton – Cincinnati Bengals

Thoughts:

  • Is there any question who the Top 5 quarterbacks in the league are?  While you could argue the order, there’s a clear top class with everyone else chasing them.
  • All indications are that Tony Romo is healthy heading into the season.  That doesn’t mean that we don’t have our concerns, which does keep him from reaching into the Top 12 and makes him more suitable as a high-end QB2.  However if he stays healthy we all know that he could produce like a Top 10 option.
  • I’ve voiced my concerns about Nick Foles before (click here to view the full article), but it is definitely worth repeating.  Remember, what Foles did last season was elite (27 TD vs. 2 INT) and is highly unlikely to be repeated (especially when you consider that he was averaging just 267.4 passing yards per game in December).  We also can’t ignore the loss of Desean Jackson.  That’s not to say that the team doesn’t have ample weapons, but they need someone to step up and stretch the field.
  • After disappointing in 2013 is Robert Griffin III primed to bounce back in a big way in 2014?  Assuming his knee injury is behind him, when coupled with the addition of weapons, you have to like his chances.
  • Jay Cutler just missed cracking our Top 12, but with Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall at his disposal would anyone really be “upset” having to settle for him?  The problem is his health and if he can stay on the field for all 16 games.

I understand that Andrew Luck CAN enter that top 5 but in no way would I say that including him in the top 5 is obvious. He has all the tools but he’s topped out at 23 passing TD thus far and yes I know his rushing is clearly a big bonus. He is clearly a clutch NFL QB already and I take nothing away from him as a player. In a wide open offense I can see him thriving. But I do not see his situation as rosy as most people do. OC Pep Hamilton is as conservative as they come. Luck’s mistakes significantly decreased in his offense and I see that continuing but I don’t see him as having the opportunity to throw for 4500+ and 32-40 TD like the top 4 can and will. Reggie Wayne is 36 and coming off an ACL tear and as much as you want to say his recovery has been great…..he’s 36 and coming off an ACL tear. Hakeem Nicks is all name and is coming off a baffling 0 TD season. He’s out of shape and is always hurt. Nicks is nothing more than a decoy. Nothing negative to say about TY Hilton but I’m not sure he’s a top 10 WR talent. He won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year and he should break out and have his best season but somehow he only scored TDs in 2 total games last year even with Wayne out and he’ll have to become more consistent. Fleener and Dwyane Allen ehhhhh nothing exciting. What I see is a great NFL QB in the making with borderline weapons around him and a crippling play caller. Think Tom Brady from 2002-2006, pre Randy Moss/Wes Welker. He CAN be a top 5 QB if all breaks right but I would think he’s more like 8-10. I’d personally take Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Tom Brady above him. I do think he’s better than Kaepernick RG3 and Foles.

Is it worth taking manning or rodgers or brees in the first round instead od damarius thomas in a 12 man standard. If I take qb later will end up with wilson or foles or kaepernick but will miss out on a ty hilton or seahawks D or such. What you think D Thomas or a top qb prof.

    • If the league gives 6 points for a passing TD, I’d look at a QB in the first round. If it’s a 4 pt. per passing TD league, I wouldn’t take one that early. Not sure D. Thomas would be my target, but it all depends

      • Dale H says:

ok, I draft 9th. Kinda touch and go if manning will be around. Rodgers or brees for your second choice??

        • Dale H says:

Still trying to decide if I take to qb then running back second or dez or thomas first ten running back second and try for cruz and harvin ans hilton later and grab wilson in the 6th round.

          • Dale H says:

Still trying to decide if I take to qb then running back second or dez or thomas first ten running back second and try for cruz and harvin ans hilton later and grab wilson in the 6th round. And yes 6 points for qb standard 12 man league.

        • Brees is #2 for me, though just by an inch

  3. Dale H says:

So in a 12 man standard with 6 points for qb..you would take manning or brees first instead of des or thomas and and say a wilson and cutler later…???

  4. Trung says:

Who would you take first overall with QB’s earning 6 points per TD and 1 point for 30 yards passing?

  5. Dale H says:

Draft went a direction I could not forsee…I ended up with Foles and Bridgwater QB’s. D.Murry,Ellington,MJD,and k.Davis RB, and Harvin, Megatron, B.Cooks ,H. Nicks, J. Gordon and M.Sanu WR and Thomas and Fleener TE and Cards On D with Hauschka K…Not close to what I had mapped out..ha stay close prof. Who would you start..

  6. Trung – I’d still take Charles, but it’s easy to fall in love with the upside of Manning. Depending on your league, though, you could still get a Brees/Rodgers in the second round

Dale H – What is the roster setup? FLEX?

    • Dale H says:

Was hoping you could tell me flex. So far Foles qb..Murry and Ellington rb Johnson and harvin wr thomas re and either MJDrew or Nicks or Cooks at flex. Of course that spot will be gordons if he ever gets to play.

  7. Jeff says:

Would you bench Rodgers week 1 vs Seattle? Russel Wilson is my back up and he’s been on fire.

Also, Doug Martin vs Carolina, or Joique Bell vs NYG
