2014 Projection: Is Eric Decker Now Being Undervalued?

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Is it possible that Eric Decker is being undervalued by fantasy owners? We all know that he’s not going to be the player he’s been in Denver the past two seasons with Peyton Manning throwing him the football:

  • 2012 – 85 receptions, 1,064 yards, 13 TD
  • 2013 – 87 receptions, 1,288 yards, 11 TD

Anyone expecting him to come close to those numbers in the Jets’ inept offense would be making a major mistake. That said, his current ADP of 93.6 feels like an over correction to the change in locale.

We all know the Jets offense is going to be pretty poor, at least it should be. They are going to be built around the running game, with Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory carrying the load. However they have to throw the ball, at least occasionally, and who else do they really have?

Do the other wide receivers, like David Nelson, Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley, instill much confidence?

Rookie Jace Amaro has been a disappointment, thus far, and rookie tight ends are difficult to depend on to begin with.

The fact is that Decker is going to get his opportunities to produce. Is he going to be 150 target monster? Of course not, but there’s no reason to think that he won’t average at least 6 targets a week, and likely a few more.

The guy did prove that he could produce with Tim Tebow at the helm and we can’t ignore the potential of Michael Vick taking over for Geno Smith at some point. Throw in that he should be the top red zone threat, at 6’3″, and there’s actually some upside.

2014 Projection: 75 receptions, 1,075 yards, 8 TD

Maybe that’s a little optimistic, but there’s every reason to think that he’s going to be productive this season. He has WR2 upside, yet you can acquire him as a borderline WR4. Don’t let the move to New York completely dissuade you, because he’s still going to produce and be a viable option.
