Updated 2014 Fantasy Football Rankings: Top 40 Wide Receivers: PPR Formats

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Remember as you prepare for your fantasy drafts that these rankings are not necessarily the order that I would select them in.  While I believe Jeffery is going to be the second best receiver, there’s no reason to select him that early because you don’t need to.  With that in mind, let’s take a final look at our PPR rankings:

  1. Calvin Johnson – Detroit Lions (1)
  2. Alshon Jeffery – Chicago Bears (2)
  3. Demaryius Thomas – Denver Broncos (3)
  4. Julio Jones – Atlanta Falcons (4)
  5. A.J. Green – Cincinnati Bengals (5)
  6. Dez Bryant – Dallas Cowboys (6)
  7. Brandon Marshall – Chicago Bears (7)
  8. Victor Cruz – New York Giants (9)
  9. T.Y. Hilton – Indianapolis Colts (8)
  10. Antonio Brown – Pittsburgh Steelers (10)
  11. Randall Cobb – Green Bay Packers (11)
  12. Kennan Allen – San Diego Chargers (12)
  13. Vincent Jackson – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (14)
  14. Michael Crabtree – San Francisco 49ers (13)
  15. Pierre Garcon – Washington Redskins (15)
  16. Jordy Nelson – Green Bay Packers (17)
  17. Mike Wallace – Miami Dolphins (18)

  34. Kenny Stills – New Orleans Saints (37)
  35. Marques Colston – New Orleans Saints (38)
  36. Hakeem Nicks – Indianapolis Colts (39)
  37. Ruben Randle – New York Giants (40)
  38. Mike Evans – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NR)
  39. Davante Adams – Green Bay Packers (NR)
  40. Cecil Shorts – Jacksonville Jaguars (33)

Fell of Rankings – Wes Welker (Den), Tavon Austin (Stl)

  • Obviously a healthy Wes Welker has the potential to be a must use option, but does anyone believe he’s going to be able to stay on the field all season at this point?  Given his history of concussions, and already having suffered one in the preseason, it’s a hard sell.  He’s tough to trust outside of being a high upside bench option.
  • Davante Adams may open the season behind Jarrett Boykin, but what is the likelihood that he overtakes him before long?  It seems likely, and he definitely has the much higher upside, which makes him worth targeting.  For more on Adams vs. Boykin, click here.
  • Surprised to see Eric Decker among the Top 24 WR?  That seems to be the consensus, but fantasy owners easily could be overcompensating for his move away from Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.  The Jets have to throw the ball somewhere and Decker is clearly the best option that they have.  For more on Decker, click here.
  • Julian Edelman notably tumbled down these rankings for a variety of reasons, including the addition of Timothy Wright into the mix.  While it’s going to take Wright some time to acclimate himself to the Patriots offense, he’s still going to play a role.  Throw in a seemingly healthy Rob Gronkowski and Edelman is a little harder to trust.
  • Mike Wallace turned up the dial in the all important third preseason game, picking up 6 receptions for 67 yards.  While he has big play ability, don’t simply write him off as a boom or bust play.  With a better rapport with Ryan Tannehill, Wallace should produce significantly better numbers this season.
  • In PPR formats Kendall Wright is a much better option, because he should once again pile on the receptions.  Touchdowns could be tough to come by, however, which limits his overall upside.
