Week 5 Rankings (2014): Top 15 Defenses

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Think you have it all figured out after Week 4?  Think again, as injuries and simple poor play will likely change things dramatically for the coming week (they were out of control last week).  Let’s take a look at how things stack up in the always unpredictable NFL for Week 5:

  1. Seattle Seahawks – at Washington
  2. San Diego Chargers – vs. New York Jets
  3. Philadelphia Eagles – vs. St. Louis
  4. Pittsburgh Steelers – at Jacksonville
  5. San Francisco 49ers – vs. Kansas City
  6. Cincinnati Bengals – at New England
  7. Chicago Bears – at Carolina
  8. Buffalo Bills – at Detroit
  9. Cleveland Browns – at Tennessee
  10. Detroit Lions – vs. Buffalo
  11. Kansas City Chiefs – at San Francisco
  12. Dallas Cowboys – vs. Houston
  13. Houston Texans – at Dallas
  14. New York Giants – vs. Atlanta
  15. Carolina Panthers – vs. Chicago

  • Anyone taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars is going to be considered one of the better defenses to play in a given week.  However, we also can’t simply push the Steelers to the top of the rankings as they haven’t been that good this season (7.0 sacks, 1 INT, 2 fumble recoveries).  Worth streaming?  Absolutely.  Top 5 option?  I wouldn’t be that quick.
  • The Carolina Panthers are searching for someone to actually carry the football, as their top three running backs are all banged up.  The Bears defense has also been good, while Cam Newton has struggled to get things on track.  It’s a good opportunity to try and exploit.
  • Remember when there was a time that you wouldn’t want your defense going up against the Patriots?  That’s certainly not the case anymore, so don’t shy away from Cincinnati.

  1. Greg says:

    No love for the Broncos?

  2. L says:

Hmm… I thought I might see the Packers in the top 10, let alone the top 15; but, there’s not on this list… why not?

  3. OD says:

Rams and Broncos defense are a “must start”

  4. Mike says:

I have the CAR def and they are stinking it up. The bills, Chiefs and Arizona def are available. Should I drop CAR for one of them for this week and upcoming.

    • I agree Carolina has been frustrating of late, but I still wouldn’t simply drop them. Only bench them if possible. That said, those options are only marginally better this week (and I’d Buffalo)
