Players of the Week: September 8-14

Hitter of the Week:
The Mets David Wright is doing everything in his power to avoid another September collapse, the only question is if the bullpen cooperates or not.  For Wright’s part, he put on a week like no one else, hitting a rediculous .632 (12-19), breaking out of a huge slump.  Throw in 4 HR (tied with Adrian Gonzalez & Ryan Howard for most in the majors), 9 RBI (tied for 4th in the league), 7 R and 1 SB, and you just have a tremendous week.  It was certainly one worthy of this award.

Honorable Mention:

  • Ryan Howard – Philadelphia Phillies – .385, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB
  • Jimmy Rollins – Philadelphia Phillies – .462, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R, 4 SB
  • Denard Span – Minnesota Twins – .333, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 2 SB
  • Nate McLouth – Pittsburgh Pirates – .360, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 0 SB

Pitcher of the Week:
A no-hitter by Carlos Zambrano was not enough to give him this award, because three starting pitchers made this a rediculously tough decision.  In the end, I went with A.J. Burnett, despite putting up just 13 K (behind both Tim Lincecum & Jon Lester, who also won 2 games).  Both his ERA and WHIP were better, as he did not give up an earned run over his 13 innings, while posting a WHIP of a miniscule 0.62.  It was a tremendous week, to say the least.

Honorable Mention:

  • Tim Lincecum – San Francisco Giants – 17.1 IP, 2 W, 0.52 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 21 K

  • Carlos Zambrano – Chicago Cubs – 9.0 IP, 1 W, 0.00 ERA, 0.11 WHIP, 10 K
  • Francisco Cordero – Cincinnati Reds – 4.0 IP, 0 W, 4 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0.50 WHIP, 5 K
