According to Dejan Kovacevic of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette (click here for the post) is reporting that Ryan Doumit will miss the next 8-10 weeks with a “slightly displaced fracture in the scaphoid bone”. Robinzon Diaz has been recalled from Triple-A to replace him on the roster and Jason Jaramillo is expected to see the “bulk of the catching duty”.
This is obviously tough news for fantasy owners. Neither of the two Pirates catchers offer much offensively, meaning you have to scour the free agent market for a potential replacement. In a 1-catcher format, you have some potential replacements for the next few weeks. Ramon Hernandez could be on the market and despite his early season struggles offers some upside. You could also potentially have John Buck, Jason Varitek and Jesus Flores, among others. Basically, you can pick and choose and get yourself through a few weeks going with the hot hand.
In a 2-catcher format, your options are far less appealing. In my keeper league the highest rated catcher available is Nick Hundley, the only player who offers everyday AB. Other options are David Ross (Brian McCann’s back-up), Koyie Hill (saw early AB due to Geovanny Soto’s injury) and Jose Morales (holding the spot until Joe Mauer is healthy). Jeff Clement is someone to consider, if he is recalled, but that is no guarantee. Jaramillo is a worst-case scenario option, though his minor league career average is just .271 with 29 HR over 1,747 AB. There just isn’t much upside there.
Basically, if you are in a deep 2-catcher league, this is extremely bad news.
What does everyone else think? If you are a Doumit owner, who are you picking up to replace him?
