Thursday Night Start ‘Em or Sit ‘Em: Week 10 (2019): Is Melvin Gordon A Must Start, Potential Sleepers & More

Thursday games are always tricky, though that’s not groundbreaking news.  Let’s take a quick look at some of the more questionable decisions for tonight’s game and try to decide who we should trust and who should be avoided:

Will Melvin Gordon Keep Things Rolling…

Gordon is coming off his best game of the season, taking 20 carries for 80 yards and 2 TD against the Packers. That also was a great matchup for him to thrive, but the sledding may not be quite as good against the Raiders. While Oakland is middle of the pack against opposing running backs, especially over the past four weeks they have been much more prone to those who can catch the football:

  • Rushing – 218 yards, 0 TD
  • Receiving – 182 yards, 4 TD

While Gordon can catch the football, that plays more into Austin Ekeler’s skill set. Throw in how prone the Raiders have been against opposing wide receivers (2nd most points per week) and tight ends (3rd most points per week), and Gordon becomes an even tougher sell. It’s easy to chalk last week’s success up to the matchup and while Gordon isn’t unusable considering the bye weeks, he’s more of a low-end RB2/FLEX play (while Ekeler looks like a better option, especially in PPR formats).

Has Hunter Renfrow Become A Must Use Option…

Renfrow has posted back-to-back solid weeks, thrusting himself on the map for fantasy owners to consider (especially with the bye weeks):

  • Week 8 (at HOU) – 4 receptions, 88 yards, 1 TD
  • Week 9 (vs. DET) – 6 receptions, 54 yards, 1 TD

The Chargers have been strong against opposing wide receivers all season, including allowing the ninth fewest points/week over the past four weeks. They are coming off a week where they held the Green Bay Packers receivers to 106 yards. It doesn’t mean that it’s impossible that Renfrow thrives, but there’s also a good chance that Oakland leans on Josh Jacobs and the running game.

Los Angeles Chargers Start/Sit Decisions:

  • Philip Rivers (QB) – Solid Start (ideal bye week fill in)
  • Austin Ekeler (RB) – Must Start
  • Melvin Gordon (RB) – Startable (but lower-end RB2)
  • Keenan Allen (WR) – Must Start
  • Mike Williams (WR) – Startable (Must start WR3, but usable as WR2)
  • Hunter Henry (TE) – Must Start

Oakland Raiders Start/Sit Decisions:

  • Derek Carr (QB) – Sit ‘Em
  • Josh Jacobs (RB) – Must Start
  • Tyrell Williams (WR) – Startable (low-end WR2)
  • Hunter Renfrow (WR) – Sit ‘Em
  • Darren Waller (TE) – Must Start
